2800 km road trip with a 2cv from 1963

When I finished the renovation of the 2cv, the thought occured to me to drive it back to its orgins. A remote area in the French department called Gers. Around 1250km from my home. A lot of practical things got in the way, but then things fell into place and I decided to really do it; drive a 13,5 hp car to the south of France on back roads.

The idea was to get the car back to show it to the previous owner. And maybe find the owner before him too. The previous owner is Pim, a good friend of mine. I told a bit about the story of the 2CV. So i did a pretty thorough preflight check and I set off to France.

From the center of Holland to Rocroi

312km

I drove from the middle of Holland where I live to the French town called Rocroi. From the starting point to the French border I took the motorway. From the Belgium/French border onward I took the smaller roads (I used Waze to plot a route with the option to avoid motorways turned on). In Rocroi I found a camp site and met the owner who also drove a 2CV. Almost all restaurants were closed, so I ended up in the only one that was open. It was pretty decent pizza.

From Rocroi to Toucy

319km

From Rocroi I proceeded on the smaller roads of Northern France. After a very nice drive through the countryside, I arrived at campsite in Toucy. I enjoyed a meal in the very nice restaurant l'Ataraxie.

From Toucy to Aix sur Vienne

316km

I decided to keep the daily distance the same and in the afternoon I arrived at a very nice simple camp site at the border of the Vienne river. There weren't any restaurants open, so I decided to go to the closest supermarket and get some bread, salad and beer for dinner.

From Aix sur Vienne to Aignan

295km

The destination of the trip was the small village of Aignan and the surrounding area. My friend who once owned this 2cv lives there. I arrived in the afternoon and parked the car in around the same spot in the yard where it was back in the day. It was a great feeling to have succeeded in bringing the car back to it's origins! I also drove by the house of the man who owned the 2cv before my friend did. Unfortunately he had passed away a few month before.
